SARS Income Tax Return: Checklist
Name: [Your name]. Tax year 2026 runs from 1 March 2025 to 28 February 2026.
1. What you need
☐ IRP5/IT3(a) from each employer.
☐ Interest and dividend certificates.
☐ Medical scheme certificate and proof of costs the scheme did not cover.
☐ Retirement annuity certificates.
☐ Travel logbook, if you claim for business travel.
2. The form
– Your return is the ITR12. SARS fills in what employers and banks report.
– Check SARS’s rules for your case: one employer, up to R500 000, with tax deducted, may not need a return. More than one employer, a car allowance, business or other income usually does.
3. Your application
– Open your return, refresh the data and check every figure.
– If a certificate is wrong, ask the employer or bank to correct it, then refresh.
– Add deductions and submit.
4. Where to file
– SARS eFiling or SARS MobiApp.
– With a SARS consultant, booked through eBooking, including by phone.
5. Time limits
– Provisional taxpayers and trusts: until 22 January 2027.
– The season for others closed on 23 October 2026. You can still file through the same channels.
– SARS may charge a monthly late-filing penalty from R250, based on income. If you cannot pay in full, contact SARS about an arrangement.
6. Keep it and renew
– Keep your documents for 5 years from filing. Send them only if SARS asks: the letter gives the deadline.
– Refunds go to your verified bank account. Change details in eFiling, MobiApp or at a branch.
– SARS never asks for passwords, OTPs or bank PINs by email, SMS or phone.
