SARS Tax Number: Checklist
Name: [Your name]. Getting the number, or finding it again if you lost it.
1. What you need
☐ First check whether you already have one: SARS has registered some people automatically since July 2022.
☐ Online or by phone: a valid South African ID, your name, email and address.
☐ At a branch: your ID, passport, temporary ID or asylum document, original and copy.
☐ At a branch: proof of address with your name, such as a bill under 3 months old or a current lease. Someone else’s home: form CRA01, signed by them.
☐ At a branch: bank letter under 30 days old, or a statement under 3 months old.
2. The form
– Form IT77 for individuals was discontinued. Online, you answer questions instead. At a branch the documents are what counts.
– First job: SARS does not require a tax number when you start. Your employer can register you.
3. Your application
– eFiling: register at secure.sarsefiling.co.za/app/register. If you have no number, SARS issues one.
– WhatsApp 0800 11 7277: choose Register for Tax. The number comes in the chat. The IT150 attachment opens with your ID number.
– Phone menu *134*7277#: choose Register for tax. The number comes by SMS, and you need no data.
4. Where to file
– Online first. A branch is for people who cannot use eFiling. eFiling and WhatsApp ask for a South African ID, so foreign nationals go to a branch with a passport and permit.
– Book at SARS eBooking or on 0800 00 7277. Upload your documents within 24 hours or the slot is cancelled.
5. Time limits
– SARS says registration happens in real time unless something must be checked. It gives no fixed time.
– If you must pay tax or file a return, register within 21 business days.
6. Keep it and renew
– Keep your IT150 (Notice of Registration). It shows your tax number.
– Lost it? WhatsApp 0800 11 7277, Tax Reference Number. Or *134*7277#, or eFiling, SARS Registered Details. Or the SARS Online Query System.
– Already on eFiling: SMS TRN, a space and your ID number to 47277, from the phone on your profile.
