Schengen visa documents, and when you need a sponsor letter
The European Commission lists what a short-stay Schengen visa application needs. Funding is part of it: you show evidence of financial means for your stay. If a relative or host pays, a sponsor letter explains who covers what.
Documents
| Document | Detail |
|---|---|
| Passport | Valid at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area |
| Application form | Signed |
| Photo | ICAO standard |
| Travel medical insurance | Emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation |
| Supporting documents | Purpose of stay, financial means, accommodation, intention to return |
| Fingerprints | Taken when you apply (some exemptions) |
Example: passport validity
Illustrative example only. Priya plans to leave the Schengen area on 20 May 2027.
| Check | Date |
|---|---|
| Leaves Schengen | 20 May 2027 |
| Passport must be valid at least until | 20 August 2027 |
Heads up. Consulates may ask for additional documents. For a multiple-entry visa, the 3 months count from your departure from the last country visited.

The sponsor letter is ready
