EES: fingerprints and a face scan instead of passport stamps
The European Commission: the Entry/Exit System (EES) registers non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay each time they cross the external borders of 29 European countries. It records your name, travel document data, fingerprints and facial image, and the date and place of entry and exit.
As of 10 April 2026, the EES replaces the stamping of passports and automatically detects overstays.
Tip
The first crossing takes longer — registration happens at the border. Leave extra time at the airport.
Before the trip
- ☐ Passport valid for the whole stay
- ☐ Count your days: 90 in any 180
- ☐ Extra time for the first EES registration
