Ubuntu 22.04 LTS: standard support ends May 2027

Canonical's release cycle page lists Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with standard support until May 2027; after that, security updates continue only with Ubuntu Pro (ESM). The upgrade path is 24.04 LTS.

What to check

  • Base images in Dockerfiles: FROM ubuntu:22.04
  • CI runners and build hosts
  • Third-party packages and kernels pinned to 22.04

Example plan

Illustrative. Nov–Dec: inventory and test images on 24.04. Jan–Feb: staging. Mar–Apr: production waves. May: done, or Ubuntu Pro for what's left.

Checklist

  • ☐ List all hosts and images on 22.04
  • ☐ Build and test on 24.04
  • ☐ Decide on Ubuntu Pro for exceptions
  • ☐ Schedule production waves
